John M. Dunn served two stints as interim chancellor of SIU Carbondale. After serving as interim chancellor in 2006-2007, Dunn went on to a successful 10-year presidency at Western Michigan University, retiring in 2018 before returning as SIU’s interim from Jan. 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020.
In his second term as interim chancellor, Dunn led the celebration of the university’s 150th anniversary and oversaw the reaffirmation of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission, implementation of test-optional admissions and the creation of the university’s nursing program. He continued the university’s academic reorganization plan and guided SIU through the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dunn, a Pinckneyville, Illinois native, served as SIU Carbondale’s provost and vice chancellor from 2002 before beginning his first term as interim chancellor. Dr. Dunn’s academic career started as a faculty member at the University of Connecticut. He also served in administrative and academic posts at Oregon State University, and the University of Utah.
